What is uta flight 772?

Uta Flight 772 was a scheduled flight from Brazzaville in the Republic of Congo to Paris, France, operated by the French airline Union de Transports Aériens (UTA). On September 19, 1989, the aircraft carrying 155 passengers and 15 crew members exploded in mid-air over the Sahara Desert in Niger, resulting in the deaths of all 170 people on board.

The bombing of UTA Flight 772 was later attributed to Libyan agents, as retaliation for France's support of Chad in a long-standing conflict with Libya. The attack was carried out by placing a bomb in the luggage compartment of the aircraft while it was on the ground in Brazzaville.

The wreckage of UTA Flight 772 was scattered over a large area in the Sahara Desert, making recovery efforts difficult and dangerous. A memorial was later built at the crash site to honor the victims of the tragedy.

The bombing of UTA Flight 772 was one of the deadliest acts of aviation terrorism prior to the September 11, 2001, attacks in the United States. It remains one of the most infamous incidents in the history of civil aviation.
